    Beer Belly Baby Beadie

    hi guys,

So I got my first reptile, a 6-10 week old female beardie, just over a week ago. She has been eating like a trooper. I have been noticing that she is starting to develop a "beer belly", however I have only been feeding her twice a day with crickets and veggies all of which have been dusted with Multical dust.

She eats anywhere between 4-8 crickets a day (majority of them are no bigger then the space between her eyes however there have been a couple that were a bit bigger). I have been struggling to get her to eat some veggies so it was suggested to me to try mixing in Soldier Fly Larvae in with her veggies and it has worked a little bit.

She defecates daily, however the last 2 - 3 days they have been slightly runnier then when I first got her and they smell.

Just wondering if this in normal in baby dragons or if I am doing something wrong.

    really appreciate your help.47485824_359358881532629_3355522472211382272_n.jpg47485824_359358881532629_3355522472211382272_n.jpg

Gidday mate, first up the belly doesn't appear to be fat, just well fed. As for the poop being a little runny and smelly that could be due to the BSFL, They are a little on the nose although they are highly nutricious.

Just a thought- you aren't feeding iceberg lettuce are you? This is the worst type of lettuce and causes diarrhoea .Most people use rocket but my favourite is greenoak because the chooks like it too!

As for the veg, it can be a problem to get them started ; it is much better if the breeder starts them off. I feed my hatchies veg from day 3 otherwise it can be difficult. You could also try a couple of mealworms in the veg, just don't feed too many as they are high in fat.We call them mars bars, nice for a treat but not in a regular diet.
Check out 1 of my favourite websites for a good idea on veg. http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html

    Thanks heaps for your help!

no I don't feed her iceberg lettuce, or lettuce of any kind because I do know that it has no nutritional value and some do contain toxins for beardies. At the moment I have been offering her a mix of bok choi and basil (ive heard that basil has high levels of calcium in it).

Don't forget to give her hard veg like carrot for jaw exercise, they can develop soft jaws and lose teeth otherwise.
Basil has a calcium ratio of 2:2.1 and is high in vitamin A.
Some lettuce is fine as it adds some moisture to the diet as well as a little fibre.
