    Thumbs up Blue Tongue Babies

Hey here is something you might not have seen before, baby blue tongues who were born today.
Blue tongues give birth to live young unlike dragons who lay eggs.
Aren't these the cutest little things?

Here's my baby from just over 2 years ago, along with mum. mother and child.jpg She was a bit of a surprise, as mum had never mated, as far as I know. There was a baby and a slug in the enclosure one morning. The little 9 gram baby is now about 500 grams of sleek, grumpy northern blue tongue.

They have been known to retain sperm for a whole year after mating, but to only have 1 baby is a bit weird.Still 1 baby is good.We have 2 Northerns who are friendly as but have taken turns as real bastards.

She'd been in hospital 15 months earlier for fluid retention (which eventually killed her--it was inflammation of her reproductive systemSleeping no more.jpg) but it would have been either poor supervision or sneakiness on her part to mate. The vet took tissue samples (which are still frozen) but we've not found anyone to do the genetic testing to rule in or out parthenogenesis. I was hoping she'd get friendlier as an adult but, unlike her mum, she wishes I'd just leave her some snails and bugger off. Not at all like my beardie. This photo is her from about 6 months ago, after she came out of brumation.

After the drought that affected most of our state, we recently gave some snails to our northern and western blueys (who had never seen a snail) and they just scoffed em.
My son who spent some months in Darwin said there are no snails in NT so they have no knowledge of them but they still attacked them!!
